    WHY?

    To bring high adventure to your unit! Westchester-Putnam Council’s groundbreaking Powder Horn course will be chock-full of fun, fellowship and adventure. Participation in this course will involve a hands-on, intense, early-morning to late night schedule ensuring that leaders will leave with a list of ideas to create a more exciting and robust program, along with the contacts and resources needed to implement them.

    WHAT IS POWDER HORN?

    Powder Horn is a resource course designed to expose Scouting’s adult leaders and youth leaders to the exhilarating, high adventure program possibilities for their unit while providing the resources necessary to operate a successful outdoor program. In plain English… participants will be spending the long weekend learning about, and actually participating in, high adventure activities and how they can be taken back to the unit. .

    The Powder Horn course is open to any registered Adult or Youth (14 & up) in the BSA. Youth should be program planners and recommended by their unit leader.

    Participants must be trained for their position PLUS:

     Youth ProtectionTrained

    Hazardous Weather

    Safety Afloat

    Safe Swim Defense

    Climb on Safely

    Meet the physical requirements of the BSA Annual Health and Medical Record in a back country environment (Parts A, B & C).

    WHAT FUN ACTIVITIES WILL WE DO?

    Powder Horn is organized around the BSA’s High Adventure elements.

    Programs for the weekend will be selected from the following exciting activities:

    Astronomy ~ Climbing & Rappelling ~ Backpacking ~ Geocaching ~ Orienteering ~ SCUBA ~ Equestrian ~ Shooting Sports with Pistols, Rifles, Shotguns, & Black Powder ~ Slack lining ~ COPE ~ Mountain Biking ~ Trail Cooking ~ Outdoor Living History ~ Fly Fishing & Fly Tying ~ Leave No Trace ~ Nature & Edible Plants ~ Rope Crossing ~ Expedition Planning ~ Archery ~ Bouldering ~ Small Boat Sailing

    While active participation is highly encouraged, participants may choose just to observe and learn any activity they are not comfortable doing.
