Cub Scout Leader Training

Very often, volunteers begin their Scouting career as a Cub Scout leader. They are thrown into a world of excitement but also chaos and confusion over how to run a den or pack. The National Boy Scouts of America has a whole slate of trainings available to leaders to assist them at every step in their Scouting careers.

1.Youth Protection TrainingExternal Link will be your first order of business and you will need to complete this before you can register as an adult volunteer.

This will be done online on the National BSA website, Scouting.org. You will need to login or create an account to complete this or any online training.

When you're done with your YPT you will be given an opportunity to print your certificate.

2.Next, you will need take Position Specific training to learn the finer details of your Cub Scouting position.

Many of these sessions are classroom sessions offered right here in our Council Service Center in Hawthorne. You can click here for the current list of upcoming training sessions.

3.Next, as you grow in your position as a Cub Scout leader and want to head to the outdoors, you'll need to take an Outdoor Skills training course designed to teach leaders how to have a safe and fun outdoor experience with their Scouts.

For Cub Scout leaders this would be either Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) or Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders (OWLS).

You guessed it! You can take that training right here in our Council as well. Click here for the current list of upcoming training sessions.

4.Lastly, leaders should avail themselves of the many, many Supplemental training courses, both online and in-person to add to their Scouting skill set.

Click here for the local training. Click hereExternal Link for online training through BSA.

By far, the best way to maximize learning is attending a University of Scouting (UofS), which is a full day of supplemental training courses in different interests, held each January and you will find information on our Training/Events page as it becomes available.
