Catholic Religious Emblems

Scouting is an effective way to help Catholic youths to do their duty to God and to their country. Scouting builds character and teaches devotion to God in an environment that provides wholesome fun under the guidance of strong adult role models. The scouting programs provide a wonderful channel to involve youth in the life of Catholic parishes.

Young people experience Scouting as a growth into personal maturity and social responsibility. They learn to assume their role in life with a high degree of commitment, and to care for others who are less fortunate. They develop a strong desire to build a culture of goodwill, respect for the environment and acceptance of duties.

The religious emblems program for Catholic scouts consists of medals, awards, and activities for individual scouts, troops, and adults. These programs reinforce family-centered and parish-supported religious education and promote spiritual growth and a deeper appreciation of our Catholic faith. Each youth is challenged to integrate the scouting values of duty to God, reverence and faithfulness into their everyday lives.

Any Catholic scout is eligible, regardless of what organization charters or sponsors the Cub Pack or Boy Scout troop. Adult guidance and support is necessary to help scouts fulfill the requirements of the awards and medals. Parents assist their child for the Family of God, Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei emblems. Emblems for older scouts, such as Ad Altare Dei and the Pope Pius XII, require special training for the adult working with the young people. Training is available through the Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting. The committee can also assist scouts to connect with a trained emblems counselor.

Adults involved in scouting are also eligible for religious emblems. Adult awards are based on the individual’s contribution to the spiritual development of Catholic youth in the Scouting program.
