Cub Scout Pack Religious Emblem Checklist

Process for Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei

The Cub Scout Religious Emblem Award process normally involves a Parent(s) working directly with their Catholic Cub Scout son.

  • Cub Scout emblems are completed in a family setting but can be completed with the assistance of a Religious Education Coordinator from the Cub’s or Pack’s parish, or a trained Catholic Scouting Religious Emblems Counselor.
  • Cub Scout Emblem work takes approximately two months to complete.
  • Visit http://www.nycatholicscouts.com/emblems.htmExternal Link for Youth Emblem descriptions, etc.

 To Get Started

A Cub Scout Parent decides to work on a Catholic Religious Emblem or a Pack Leader arranges for Cub Scouts to work on a Catholic Religious Emblem Award as a den or unit.

  • A Parent working with his/her child does not need to be a trained Catholic Scouting Emblem Counselor. There is no official Cub Scout specific Religious Emblem training for the person working with a group of Cub Scouts but it is suggested that Boy Scout Religious Emblem Counselor training be considered.
  • A Parent or Unit Leader obtains the Religious Emblem book(s) at the Scout Shop.
  • The Parent or Unit Leader contacts their Parish Priest or Parish Catholic Religious Education Coordinator to inform them that they are working on the Catholic Religious Emblem Award.
  • A Parent and/or a Parish Religious Education Coordinator will work with the Cub Scout on the workbook.
  • Neither the Westchester Putnam Council staff coordinator nor the Catholic Scouting Committee Chair is notified at this time.

 Upon Completion:

When the Religious Emblem workbook is completed, an appointment is made with the Parish Priest/ Religious Education Coordinator to review the scout’s workbook with each boy. The Parish Priest, and as appropriate Religious Education Coordinator, acknowledging completion of the Emblem requirements by signing off in the workbook.

  • The entire workbook is then brought into the Council Office for the Council Staff Catholic Scouting Coordinator’s review, sign off, on behalf of the Catholic Scouting, and issuance, as an accommodation to the recipient family, of the appropriate Cub Scout medal, knot and card.

 Please call Council offices (914-773-1135 x234) beforehand to check availability and to schedule an appointment.

  • The signed Religious Emblem Application and payment for the Religious Emblem Medal are given to the Council Coordinator. Checks are made payable to WPC BSA.
  • The Medal(s) are to be presented by the Parish or the Pack at a Catholic Mass or another appropriate Catholic Ceremony at a time agreed to by the parish coordinator and scout leader.
