Dia del Explorador! 2015 Mohican Camporee

Dia Del Explorador! Day of the Scout!

2015 Mohican District Camporee

May 1-3, 2015 at Croton Point Park

A special thank you to Mother Nature for the absolutely perfect weekend, to all the troops who ran stations, all our cooks and servers for lunch, and to the Program Committee and volunteers who made it all possible. This was our biggest Mohican District Camporee yet - with 170 scouts and 75 adults attending from 13 Mohican and 3 Algonquin troops. Everyone had an awesome time, and we could not have asked for better weather! We were very glad that so many newly crossed over scouts were able to participate. It was great that we could make one of their first scouting experiences so much fun.

A total of 23 patrols took part in the scout skills competition during the day. The competition was tough, and the scores in the top 10 were very close. Congratulations to all our scout skills winners!
  • 1st Place - Troop 5 Yonkers (906 points out of a possible 1000)
  • 2nd Place - Troop 25 Yonkers (882 out of 1000)
  • 3rd Place - Troop 67 Hartsdale  (866 out of 1000)
Special thanks to Officer Dave Barca from the Yonkers Police Department and the Explorer Post, who ran an excellent station on distracted driving. Many of the scouts were very surprised what a big difference a very small distraction can make, so thank you to the Yonkers PD for their support and for educating our scouts to be better drivers and passengers.

We had 8 entries from 7 troops for the Dessert Contest later in the evening. The scouts showed a lot of creativity and made some very tasty treats, which did not make the judges' job easy! We actually had a tie in one category because both entries - which were made from scratch and used Dutch ovens - were both so good!
  • Tastiest - a tie between Troop 12 Pleasantville's Cherry Clafouti -and- Troop 47 Yonker's Blueberry Dumplings (recipes please!)
  • Most Creative - Troop 73 White Plains' "Elvis Special" with peanut butter, bananas and bacon
  • Most Themed - Troop 24 Dobbs Ferry's Skull Cake made of pancakes, marsh mellows, chocolate frosting and candy bars
  • Scoutmasters Choice - Troop 1 Crestwood's Cinnamon Monkey Bread
Again, THANK YOU to everyone who made this fabulous event possible! If you would like to help plan activities, or just have a suggestion or comment, please feel free to contact the Mohican Program Chair, Dina Bochnik, at dina.bochnik@gmail.com
