Water for Flint Good Turn!

WPCBSA – Water for Flint Donation Drive

A Westchester-Putnam Council Good Turn for America Project

Both the Scout Oath and Scout Law call for Scouts to be “Helpful” and to “help other people at all times.”

Michigan residents have put out a call for donations of bottled water for the city of Flint, where poor water quality has prompted a major health crisis after high levels of lead were detected in the area's water supply.

Westchester-Putnam Council of the Boy Scouts of America is answering the call.

More than 20,000 Flint homes are experiencing high levels of lead in their water, affecting more than 100,000 people. Donations of unopened, full-cases of bottled water and gallon jugs of water are needed and welcome.

The Westchester-Putnam Council Boy Scouts of America is heading up a Bottled Water Drive to deliver fresh drinking water to the Scouting families of Flint, MI. We are asking our fellow scouts and scouters to drop off full cases of water bottles and gallons per the following schedule:

Saturday, February, 13th from 10 am – 1 pm

Monday, February 15th from 10 am – 12 noon

Saturday, February 20th from 10 am – 1 pm

Or Monday through Friday during regular business hours (9:00AM – 5:00PM)

Please bring your donations to Westchester-Putnam Council Service Center located at 41 Saw Mill River Road, Hawthorne, NY 10532 by 5:00PM Wednesday February 24.

The donated water will be delivered to the Michigan Crossroads Council in Flint, MI for a major Scout Good Turn Distribution Day on Saturday, February 27, 2016.

If you would like more information, please contact Jay Singer, Westchester-Putnam Good Turn Chairperson via email at Water for Flint (wpcbsawaterforflint@gmail.com).

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Why are we requesting donations of Water Bottles instead of Momentary Donations?

In doing this Good Turn what we would like to point out is that we try to teach our Scouts to get involved and help others.  This gives them a project they can feel and touch as opposed to people just writing a check.  This will help our Scouts feel a sense of accomplishment in doing something positive that has a direct impact on people.  Sure, collecting money is the easy way, but we want to provide an opportunity for our Scouts and Scouters to see the difference they can make.

As we realize purchasing the water bottles closer to the affected area might be more efficient, with the on going crisis the availability of water in the region is getting tight. In a conversation with the Scout Executive in Michigan, they are trying to deal with an immediate need of getting drinkable water to the members of the Scouting Community in Flint, MI.

Can only Scouts make donations or can the public?

Scouts and the General Public are more than welcome to participate in our Water For Flint Good Turn.

Will the water only go to Scouting families?

All donated water will be going primarily to the Scouting Families affected in the Flint, MI community and to those who are in need with-in the Flint, MI community as determined by the Michigan Boy Scout Council.

Shipping is expensive, who is paying for the shipping?

Generous donors of the Water For Flint Good Turn campaign are underwriting the shipping cost.

How are the water bottle donations getting to Flint, MI?

Westchester-Putnam Council Scouting volunteers will deliver the donated water bottles. These volunteers will drive the water out to Flint in time for their big distribution day on February 27th at 8 AM.
