NEW -- Special Needs Scouting Survey
As part of the year-end 2016 re-chartering process, ALL scouting units will required to submit a completed one page Special Needs Scouting survey. Part of a national trend, the Special Needs Scouting Committee asks you to complete this simple 1-page survey to the best of your ability so that training and resources can be better formulated for all units.
The survey is extremely simple and easy to understand. We encourage leaders to complete the 1-page survey beforehand and to ensure that the person in your unit delegated with re-chartering your unit remembers to bring the completed survey to the re-chartering meeting with your District Executive in December.
The Special Needs Scouting (SNS) Committee estimates that approximately 15—20% of our Council’s scouting youth fall into the broadly defined category of special needs. For example, in a smaller sample of +50 scout attendees at the last NYLT training, at least 15% had a special need. Keep in mind, that the NYLT attracts higher functioning scouts too, so 15% as a generalization may be low relative to our Council’s total disabled youth member base.
Further, the SNS Committee believes one of the more frequent challenges characterizing our special needs scouting universe is related to attention issues. Accordingly, more “hands on” training in this area is being targeted for development to assist our ALL of our unit leaders for Univ of Scouting.
Please take 5 minutes and review the 1-page survey. Know and understand that the completion of this survey will now be a mandatory part of the annual re-chartering process.
The SNS Committee will continue to advertise and alert our Council every month about this important new unit re-chartering responsibility and welcome the opportunity to work with each and every unit leader to complete this valuable survey on a timely basis.
The SNS Committee welcomes your feedback—it’s a gift!
